The Price of our Freedom

 Irena Sendler

There recently was a death of a 98 year-old lady named Irena. During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an 'ulterior motive' ... She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews, (being German.) Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids..) She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.. During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept the m in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family. Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.

Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize ... She was not selected.

Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.

  1. I think this article describes someone who truly wanted peace. I do not understand the logic behind the people who vote on the candidates for the Noble Peace Prize. Just as I believe Irena should have gotten the award, I also believe Neda Agha Soltani should have been awarded the prize this year.

  2. I do think that Irena should have been awarded the nobel peace prize for her extraordinary efforts and hard work into saving God's children. I think she was an incredibly intelligent woman to be able to think of all that and ways to divert them from finding her out. Also, her efforts to even preserve the names so she could reunite them with their parents is simply awesome! While Al Gore yes is quite inferior to these works, I think his efforts should have been recognized. (he later got an academy award)I do feel that raising awareness of global warming and the Earth's conservation is important and I am glad he is getting that message out. Al Gore did share the award the with government board on climate changes first, so it wasn't just the excellence of one man. I think it was taken out of context when he was awarded for making a "slide show". i mean hopefully he did more work than that! Well, then again, Obama did win for doing nothing....

  3. If only all of us could have the courage and faith that Mrs. Sendler had. even though this article should be use to honor this fantastic woman unfortunatly it is nearly impossible to stay away from the noble peace prize issue. Al Gore has taken the prize from what has he truely taken away a peice of medal as seen this year given to anyone the council feels is suited for the award my question is whose next

  4. This is a wonderful story of a true hero. IT would of been a really good choice, if she would of won it, but now adays we America doesn't know what a true hero is. So I love hearing stories like this they make me want to do more, they inspire me to be the best I can be.

  5. I think that Irena should have won instead of Al Gore. Not only did she go against a very power government of her day, she saved little one's lives and tried to reunite them with thier families. This speaks VOLUMES to her character! It's a shame that the Germans beat her and injured her. What's even more of a shame is the fact that someone can't get a peace prize for having peace inside, in their heart.
