The Water That Brings Life

The Water that Brings Life.
by Kevin Probst

When Jesus met the woman at the well (John 4) he had a private conversation with her. She was amazed he was willing to ask her for water and to even speak to a Samaritan woman! As the conversation progressed, it was obvious she wanted to talk only of surface issues and then be well on her way. But Jesus wanted to dig deep into a heart that has been made cold and calloused by years of serial relationships that had left her empty and void of any feeling.

They talked about water, living water. She had no understanding of such a concept. They talked a bit about the religious differences between the Jews and the Samaritans. She told him how much she hated hauling all her water pots to the well every day in the mid-afternoon heat. Then, rather abruptly, Jesus asked her a question that made her feel very uncomfortable….it was a “let’s put it all out on the table” kind of question. “Will you go get your husband and bring him here?”

She had learned some things in life the hard way. She had learned that real satisfaction doesn’t come from sexual relationships. She learned that some men try to validate themselves by pursuing attractive women but after each conquest they get bored with her because the world is filled with thousands of attractive, sensual women and so off he goes to find his next conquest. Her lifeless eyes and her pre-maturely aged face indicate a heart that has been wounded over and over and now the remaining scars make it very difficult for her to feel emotions any more.

The males in her life were seeking satisfaction in sexual relationships. It’s like the water Jesus was talking to her about. You drink deeply from the well at Sychar but you will come back again and again because your thirst always returns. You can drink from other wells, you can choose to use other vessels but the thirst relentlessly returns. A man’s true self-worth is found in the love and respect he gets from his family. Men were created to be monogamous. A man who has learned to be content is one who has learned the mission God had in mind for him when he put him on this earth and he is diligently working to accomplish that mission.

She sometimes gets so wrapped up in the cultural deception that if she is beautiful enough and sensual enough he will love her and stay with her forever. But, there are millions of beautiful and sensual women in the world. If that’s all she can offer he will get bored eventually. Her real beauty and her sustaining attributes are her warmth, her sensitiveness to the needs of her husband and her children, her grace and charm, her modesty and her love for her Creator. These features are God-given and they are the ropes that bind her to her husband and family.

He will go to the gym daily and endure long hours of painful workouts in order to achieve the athletic look that will catch her eye. There is certainly nothing wrong with staying healthy and strong. But, there is a reason for the ‘dumb jock’ syndrome. She will eventually get very bored with a good looking jock who only has one thing on his mind. Our culture is filled with sexual nomads who are frustrated because real, true satisfaction in their lives is so elusive. They haven’t the time for building relationships and eventually marrying.

I thought it was downright pitiful a few years ago when I read in a book written by a prominent FOX news correspondent his braggadocious claim to have bedded hundreds of women. About that same time a very famous professional basketball player also wrote of his multiple conquests. They thought this was reason to be admired. They’ve certainly drunk often from the well but they’ve never drunk the living water that satisfies forever the thirst in an empty soul.

She is not looking to be a number on his list. She wants a monogamous relationship. She wants to trust a man who is dignified by his trustworthiness. The relationship or the marriage will struggle when it’s all about him or all about her. The true secret to successful marriage is to make it all about God. When God is centered in the marriage then the two of them can build a web of love around their family and friends that is enviable and indestructible.

Is not the chief end in marriage to present to the world an earthy display of the divine love Christ has for his church?

If They Find a Cure They Won't Have a Job

Why will no one in the mainstream media investigate the swine flu? Why are they no longer ‘testing’ for the swine flu? How will we know who had swine flu and who had regular flu?

What are the results of this study? Give 100 people the swine flu vaccine. Compare that group to 100 people who did not receive the vaccine. Which group exhibited more cases of swine flu. You’ll never see the results of such a study because no study has been done and never will be.

Claims that 80,000 Americans will die of Swine flu this year seem utterly absurd when considering the flu’s slow start. So, what is going on? Why are they pushing the vaccine?

Millions of vaccine have been sold. There hasn’t been time to sufficiently test the vaccine. We sell massive amounts to other countries with the understanding that the pharmaceutical companies will be entirely protected from any lawsuits.

It seems to me to be marketing 101. Pretty simple. When Coca Cola wants to boost sales they come out with a brand new product. They advertise the living daylights out of it and they make billions. When a pharmaceutical wants to make lots of money they come up with a new disease. They market the living daylights out of it and they make billions of dollars. Millions are petrified this year because of the way the media is handling this. It’s not unusual to see a report that five people have died in Seattle of the Swine Flu. It’s tragic when anyone dies but they fail to report that 15 people have died of the regular flu.

Imagine what would happen if someone found a cure to cancer tomorrow. Can you even possibly perceive of the billions of dollars that would be lost by pharmaceuticals and other medical entities? Why can they find drugs that will reduce cholesterol and regulate hearts, drugs that will enable older men to have the sexual prowess of a twenty year old but they can’t seem to find a cure to the common cold. Do you know how much money they would lose? Finding a cure would eliminate the billions of dollars made on treating the symptoms.

Why are they claiming a normal flu season as pandemic? Will someone explain why Ahlzheimer’s is now so prevalent, why autism has increased drastically and why most of the kids I teach in school are taking some kind of drug to inhibit their behavior? Is this all about making money? Is it about controlling the masses?

I suppose the CDC (Center for Disease Control) gets huge amounts of grant money from the federal government. Is it necessary to create pseudo-pandemics to justify their own existence?

Previous generations were able to survive the flu using their grandmothers home remedies. Why do we spend millions of dollars on medicines that simply treat the symptoms, perhaps no better than mom’s cod liver oil!

It just seems somehow we are be deceived and losing our way.

Evan the Elf

Evan the Elf

By Kevin Probst

“Have you ever wondered how Santa could know if you’re naughty of nice each year as you grow? For hundreds of years it’s been a big secret. It now can be shared if you promise to keep it.” So begins a book, Shannon, my wife, read to our son Kameron tonight. The book is called The Elf on the Shelf and we now have a little elf in our house whom we’ve named Evan.

The whole concept of the book is for Kameron to wake up each morning between now and Christmas and look for the little elf. He will be up high where he cannot be reached. If Kam touches him he loses some of his ‘magic’. The elf watches Kameron every day and then reports to Santa Claus on his behavior.

As I listened to his mother read him that story I thought of a verse in Hebrews (4:13) “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” Now it’s just a story, just a fun fantasy for Kameron, but one day we want him to realize that God is always watching, is always aware of his thoughts, words and deeds. We pray often and earnestly that Kam will give his heart to Jesus and live his life in a way that pleases his Savior.

Jesus sat at the well when the Samaritan woman approached him. At one point in the conversation he asks her to “Go, call you husband and come here.” She replies, “I have no husband.” But Jesus couldn’t be thrown off so easily. She was covering up the truth by telling a truth. Jesus cuts to the chase, “”You are right in saying ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” Jesus is using irony. He knows the lie she is trying to cover.

This woman is skilled in using manipulative language so she changes the subject. “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” Jesus must have been amused. John Piper says that an animal will gnaw off its leg to get out of a trap and this woman’s mind was mangled trying to escape her trap. “Now that we’re talking about adultery, where is the proper place to worship?”

She was astonished that Jesus knew all there was to know about her. He knows about her five failed marriages, he knows about her ravenous thirst for something that will satisfy. He knows about her dark, depressing moments and her struggle with guilt and emptiness. He knows about her habits and addictions. And though he knew all of these things, he was not repulsed by her, he persisted in trying to break through her cold and calloused heart.

Jesus was revealing to her….I understand you. I made you. I know why you’ve been running from man to man. It’s because you can’t find any satisfaction. I have living water that will take care of that problem forever. This is water you can’t drink with your lips, you must drink with your soul. You don’t sip it, you draw freely to feel it’s satisfying affects.

Don’t run back home to your television, your trashy books, your I-pod and your computer games. Don’t spend your money on trivial things in a vain attempt to find satisfaction. Don’t turn to a lover or a new hobby or a new hubby. Allow my eternal light to shine on the darkest recesses of your soul.

In The Little Elf on the Shelf my son learns that someone is watching and that someone wants to reward him. The next lesson Kam will learn is that because of his boyish nature he will misbehave, probably many times before Christmas. Santa rewards good behavior but God’s gift of forgiveness is free to all who will ask. Not only does he watch everything we do, he knows everything about us. I know that can make one feel uncomfortable but once you know the true nature of God is becomes reassuring.

We Don't Know Who We Are

We Don’t Know Who We Are?

By Kevin Probst

I’ve never been in the military so I am ignorant of a lot of things pertaining to military strategy and philosophy. I’m struggling to understand our mission in Afghanistan. Obama is about to announce he will send thousands more of our precious young men to a primitive land to risk their lives. As a result of his decision many, too many, of those young men will never return to their families.

Are we fighting al Qaida? Are we fighting the Taliban? Are we trying to prop up the government of Karzai? Is he a worthy ally or are we investing the lives of our young men in a corrupt leader?

The enemy is al Qaeda. They are a world wide organization intent on bring about an apocalyptic end to all infidels (Jews, Americans, Christians). They have no geographic location. They are well organized into cell groups infiltrated into almost every major nation. Their goal is worldwide annihilation of the infidel who, by his very existence, is prohibiting the coming of their great Imam. The Taliban has no such lofty goals. They are a localized group intent on acquiring power in a primitive country. Why is Afghanistan so important to us? We punish the Taliban for harboring al Qaida but now that al Qaeda has moved on is it not time for us to move on also?

It seems we want to limit al Qaeda to some certain geographical location. We’ve never fought a war against an enemy that is so elusive. It is like fighting an army of spirits. They are surreal and will not be confined by our chosen boundaries. All one needs to fight for al Qaeda is an apartment, a computer and a fax machine.

Many believe the next step is to focus on Pakistan. The threat of Pakistan is real. They harbor nuclear weapons. But who is willing to believe that Pakistan is where most of the al Qaeda operatives are trained? They are trained throughout the world, even here within our own borders.

Al Qaeda is not political nor are they geographical, they are ideological. This isn’t a war that can be limited to a location, nor is it a war that can be won by defeating an insignificant group calling themselves the Taliban. Ideologies are not won or lost in military battles. I favored the war in Viet Nam. I favored the idea of trying to contain an ideology (communism) that was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of millions in the last century. I favor the use of the military to check the spread of radical Islam. But, we didn’t win the war on communism. It is alive and well, actually thriving in some parts. What is our strategy in dealing with the ideology.

Military force is certainly one option in trying to stop the spread of radical Islam but can a more effective way of checking this disease be found in converting those who embrace such a worldview to a better idea. Like the overwhelming march of white blood cells in the body to fight a disease, we must out number them by reasserting our belief in our own convictions and then going on a mission to convince the multitudes that our system works much better than theirs.

Therein lies a major problem. We don’t know who we are anymore. We don’t know what we believe. We embrace and celebrate the immorality pumped into our homes from Hollywood and the hate us for it. 80% of Americans claim to be Christian but most can’t answer the question about being born again because they don’t understand it. We love democracy and our constitution but we now we are governed by an administration intent on experimenting with socialism and downplaying the great document upon which our country was founded.

We need to reestablish what it really means to be an American. We need to define ourselves as a people. We need to put a check on political correctness because it is causing us to lose sight or our mission and it is blurring the definition of who we really are. When we win the battle within ourselves then we can march boldly toward a well defined enemy.

Just Say It, Sarah.

Just Say It, Sarah!!

Sarah Palin came charging out of Alaska last year from a life of relative obscurity to become the great hope of the GOP. Someone asked me the other day what I thought of her. I retreated and said I didn't really have an opinion yet.

So many seem to get pretty emotional about her specific distinctions. She has done an admirable job of navigating around Levi, the hormone driven teen who impregnated her daughter, Bristol. She juggles the possibility of becoming president nicely without threatening the masculinity of the other men in her life, her husband, Todd, and her father. She is much admired because she chose "not to abort" her Down's Syndrome child, Trig. I have great respect for her as a mother willing to accept her responsibilities but shouldn't we expect the same decision of any mother with a Down's Syndrome child? It's unfortunate that a mother who chooses life for an exceptional child is unusual. It's sad when a mother's deep love for a special child is an unusual spectacle.

She is unusual in other ways. How many women in your life are talented moose hunters? She has also been greatly admired for going after corruption in her own party in the state of Alaska. But shouldn't that be expected of any politician who has any measure of dedication for what is right? Why is it that she is being elevated for doing what any decent law abiding individual should do? Is it because we have become so accustomed to the immoral behavior of our politicians that we consider the party with less sin than the other to be the superior party?

I guess the question that causes me hesitation when it comes to Sarah is this: Will she follow the broad political road and just say the right things to the right crowds in order to get elected or will she follow the narrow road of integrity and just simply call a spade a spade? My concerns were exacerbated after watching Hannity interview Sarah on Fox News the other night. Hannity threw her some 'softball' questions that she seemed to sidestep because it would be politically expedient for her.

Hannity gave Sarah multiple chances to peg Obama as a socialist but obviously she thought being so bold with the truth might not fly with her more moderate supporters so she sidestepped. Hannity then softened the question and asked her if she thought Obama was a radical? Again, she sidestepped and refused to identify Obama as the radical he is. Sarah, just look at the people he has appointed as his Czars! Look at his policies and the bills he is promoting, they have SOCIALIST and RADICAL written all over them.

So now I'm trying to decide which interview was more disappointing: her travesty with Katie Couric or the timidity she revealed with Sean Hannity. Come on Sarah, you've shown plenty of courage when confronted with the Alaskan moose, how 'bout showing the same courage by opposing a political enemy who won't hesitate to annihilate you with his Chicago style politics just like he did Hillary!!

An Apology May Be In Order

I earlier posted a picture of President Obama under the caption, "What is wrong with this picture?"

After investigating this picture further, there seems to be a discrepancy. This picture may have been take at a wreath-laying ceremony several months earlier at Arlington National cemetary. Obama is not saluting in this picture because "Hail to the Chief" is being played. The other men are defering to him but he is following proper protocal by taking a proper stance.

Barack Obama displayed a proper salute at the Memorial Day Service at Arlington National Cemetary on May 25th, 2009.

Watch the following video to understand why Obama is not saluting.

I may have inaccurately concluded that Obama was revealing anit-Americanism. Apologies are in order.

Angry Housewife in New Brunswick

Angry Housewife From New Brunswick

Written by a housewife in New Brunswick , to her local newspaper. This is one ticked off lady.

‘Are we fighting a war on terror or aren’t we? Was it or was it not started by Islamic people who brought it to our shores on September 11, 2001 and have continually threatened to do so since?

Were people from all over the world, not brutally murdered that day, in downtown Manhattan , across the Potomac from the nation’s capitol and in a field in Pennsylvania ?

Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a horrible, burning or crushing death that day, or didn’t they?

And I’m supposed to care that a few Taliban were claiming to be tortured by a justice system of the nation they come from and are fighting against in a brutal insurgency.

I’ll start caring when Osama bin Laden turns himself in and repents for incinerating all those innocent people on 9/11.

I’ll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle East start caring about the Holy Bible, the mere belief of which is a crime punishable by beheading in Afghanistan .

I’ll care when these thugs tell the world they are sorry for hacking off Nick Berg’s head while Berg screamed through his gurgling slashed throat.

I’ll care when the cowardly so-called ‘insurgents’ in Afghanistan come out and fight like men instead of disrespecting their own religion by hiding in mosques and behind women and children.

I’ll care when the mindless zealots who blow themselves up in search of nirvana care about the innocent children within range of their suicide bombs.

I’ll care when the Canadian media stops pretending that their freedom of speech on stories is more important than the lives of the soldiers on the ground or their families waiting at home to hear about them when something happens.

In the meantime, when I hear a story about a CANADIAN soldier roughing up an Insurgent terrorist to obtain information, know this:

I don’t care.

When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the head when he is told not to move because he might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the bank:

I don’t care.

When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a prayer mat, and fed ‘special’ food that is paid for by my tax dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being ‘mishandled’, you can absolutely believe in your heart of hearts:

I don’t care.

And oh, by the way, I’ve noticed that sometimes it’s spelled ‘Koran’ and other times ‘Quran’. Well, Jimmy Crack Corn you guessed it,

I don’t care!!

Only five defining forces have ever offered to die for you:

1. GOD

2. The British Soldier.

3. The Canadian Soldier.

4. The US Soldier, and

5. The Australian Soldier
One died for your soul, the other 4 for your freedom.
